Welcome to Generation Gap where we ask you about your favorite generation of a certain multi-generational car nameplate. Then, explain why your choice is right to the rest of us uneducated folks.

The Chevrolet Suburban. Perhaps the longest running nameplate in American automotive history, this people hauler has made it from its original form as a big, pretentious workhorse to its modern form as a big, pretentious icon. Whether it be a station wagon, a panel wagon, or a gigantic SUV, you have to admit the Suburban commands respect. Today, we begin with the first five generations, vehicles that definitely leaned towards the van/wagon side of the utility spectrum.
Here are the options:
First Generation [1935 - 1940] Carryall

Second Generation [1941 - 1946] Art Deco

between it and the gmc, its about one of the meanest looking trucks they made.

That was a tough call for me. I had to go with the 60-66 though.

I don't love trucks, but I'd rock a 4th gen with a big loud v8. That thing looks bad ass.

I love the 4th and the 5th, but must pick 5th when forced to chose. Suburbans are better the squarer they get.

Definitely. I call it the Volvo theory!
Nothing beats a good, angular two box design.

Indeed!

they look awesome too, specifically the 1960 & 61 with the monster eyebrows, and grille.

That’s a tough one, from a purely stylistic standpoint the second gen is clearly the best looking one IMO, but when I think of old Suburbans the first thing that comes to mind is a rough and tough SUV that has some good offroading potential, the perfect combination of sport and utility, the second gen just says utility to me, so fifth generation it is!

Yeah, there’s a reason the second was known as the ‘Art Deco’ Suburban! I can definitely get behind that mindset, the fifth gen was the last panel van Suburban and it definitely had much more off-road capability than the previous generations!
